This map shows where Millennials are buying houses (and for how much)

This map shows where Millennials are buying houses (and for how much)This map shows where Millennials are buying houses (and for how much)Millennial homeownership rates are essential to understanding the housing market because they facilitate additional home sales for other people. How does this work? Suppose you make an offer on a house. The current owner is also probably on the market, and he or she likely has a contingent offer on aelendher house. This sets off a chain reactionthroughout the economy.Millennial homeownership rates are therefore an easy way to judge the economic vitality of any given area. Thats why we created this new map.Our viz takes millennial homeownership data fromAbodo and maps it by metro area across the country. Abodo adopted the data from the U.S. Census Bureau, which regularly collects a variety of information about the population, including the age of homeowners, the estimated value of their homes, and how long it would take to accumulate a 20% down paym ent. Our numbers are from 2015. We then overlaid this information across metro areas with bubbles representing the portion of millennial homeowners in each market the bigger the bubble, the more millennial homeowners there are. We also color-coded each bubble to represent the median value of their homes- dark red circles mean the homes are worth over $500k, and dark blue means under $200k. This gives you a quick snapshot of the overall economy and the housing market. The first trend you can see on the map is a clustering of red circles on both the West Coast and along the Northeast. The most expensive city in the country for millennials is San Jose, CA, where the average millennial buys a home worth $737,077. Seattle, WA in the Northwest is also relatively expensive at $342,769. These are population-dense areas withboomingtech sectors. At the other end of the spectrum, you can see clusters of blue bubbles across the Midwest in old manufacturing cities like Detroit, MI ($148,404) and Cleveland, OH ($160,251). Memphis, TN is the cheapest place for millennials at $142,795. Southern states like Texas and Florida are also relatively affordable thanks in large part to their suburban sprawl, whichZillow predicts will expand next year. Its no surprise that homes are more expensive in California (think Silicon Valley) than the industrial heartland, but consider how homeownership rates change based on affordability. The red bubbles all tend to be smaller than the blue bubbles. This means that as homes get more expensive, millennials become increasingly unable to afford them. Its not like theres a surplus of ultra-rich millennials buying up all the houses in California and New York. Millennials are just as sensitive to high prices as everyone else.Lets break the map down into a top ten list of the urban areas with the highest rates of millennial homeownership, combined with the average price of their home. A full 42% of the millennials living in Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN ow n their own home, the highest rate in the country.1. Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI 42.4% and $222,5282. St. Louis, MO-IL 40.2% and $167,7913. Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, MI 40.2% and $148,4044. Louisville/Jefferson County, KY-IN 38.5% and $158,9745. Pittsburgh, PA 37.5% and $152,7316. Indianapolis-Carmel-Anderson, IN 37.4% and $161,8567. Kansas City, MO-KS 37.1% and $170,2548. Nashville-DavidsonMurfreesboro-Franklin, TN 37.0% and $213,0909. Oklahoma City, OK 36.7% and $172,48510. Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, MD 36.3% and $272,805Buying a home is often the biggest financial decision anybody makes, and thats especially true for young people. And theres a lot to consider when buying your first home, but one thing other than affordability to keep in mind is how many other millennials are in the saatkorn situation. If youre a millennial looking to buy a home, and you want to live next to other young people, you just might have to move to the Midwest. This article was originally publi shed on HowMuch.

And in Canada, 41 percent of respondents say their firms rely on project or temporary professionals, up nine points from 20 17.A related trend, discussed in and Protivitis white paper, is how more companies are turning to external providers to help them recruit, develop and manage their talent, including full-time and interim staff. These businesses need partners who possess deeper knowledge of their strategies, risks and opportunities. That knowledge is critical in the digital age because it helps ensure that rapidly changing talent needs can be met quickly and effectively enough to exploit new opportunities.Managed services providers can offer that support. 7 incredible things that happen if you learn to love being alone

7 incredible things that happen if you learn to love being alone7 incredible things that happen if you learn to love being aloneWe live in a world of constant contact - a place thats losing sight of the importance of being alone. Offices are abandoning cubicles in favor of shared desks and wide-open common spaces, and rather than sitting at their desks working independently, school children are placed in groups. It seems that a never-ending ping has become ur cultures omnipresent background noise, instantly informing us of every text, tweet, and notification. Even something as mundane as cooking dinner has become worthy of social sharing. One result of all this social connection is that many of us rarely have any time alone. While were told that this connectivity is a good thing and that being around other people is necessary for a fulfilled life, you can certainly have too much of a good thing. All mens misfortunes spring from their hatred of being alone. Jean de la BruyereA study of 600 computer programmers at 92 companies found that while productivity levels were relatively stable within each company, they varied greatly from one company to the next. The mora productive companies had one thing in common they ditched the ultra-hip open office in favor of private workspaces that granted freedom from interruptions. Of the top performers, 62% said they had adequate privacy at work, while only 19% of the worst performers shared that opinion. And, among the low performers, 76% said they were often unnecessarily interrupted.Solitude isnt just a professional plus its also good for your mental and emotional well-being. To get the most out of life, you must learn to enjoy spending time alone. The benefits of solitude are too numerous to catalog, but here are some of the best. You recuperate and recharge. All of us - even the hopeless extroverts among us - need time to recuperate and recharge. Theres nothing like spending time alone to make this happen. The peace, quiet , and mental solitude you experience when youre by yourself are essential to recovering from the stresses of daily living. You can do what you want.As fun as it is to spend time with other people, it inevitably leads to compromise. Youre constantly modifying your ideas to accommodate other peoples desires and opinions. Being alone frees you up to do exactly what you want when you want. You can throw on whatever you feel like wearing, eat what you feel like eating, and work on projects that are meaningful to you.You learn to trust yourself.Freedom is mora than doing what you want its the ability to trust your gut and to think clearly, without any pressure or outside influence. Being alone helps you form a clear understanding of who you are, what you know, and whats right for you. It teaches you to trust yourself. When around others, even when you dont realize it, you monitor peoples reactions in order to gauge the appropriateness of your own feelings and actions. When youre alone, its all on you. You develop your own ideas and opinions, without having them watered down by what anyone else thinks. Once you learn to enjoy being alone, youll discover what youre truly capable of, without the constraints of other peoples thinking. It increases your emotional intelligence.Emotional intelligence (EQ) is your ability to recognize and understand emotions in yourself and others and your ability to use this awareness to manage your behavior and relationships.TalentSmarthas tested more than a million people and found that 90% of top performers are high in EQ. Self-awareness is the foundation of emotional intelligence, and you cant increase your EQ without it. Since self-awareness requires understanding your emotions and how you react to various people and situations, this necessitates careful self-reflection, and self-reflection happens best when youre alone. It boosts your self-esteem.Enjoying your own company is a huge confidence booster. If youre bored and restless when yo ure by yourself, its easy to start thinking thatyoureboring or that you need other people around to enjoy yourself. Learning to enjoy time alone boosts your self-esteem by confirming that you are enough. You appreciate other people more.Absence really does make the heart grow fonder. Time alone lets you see people in a whole new light, and it helps you to develop a renewed sense of gratitude for who they are and what they do.You get more done. Its said that more hands make light work, and while that might be true when it comes to raking leaves, its a completely different story with cognitive tasks. Even the effectiveness of brainstorming is more myth than reality. Researchers from Texas AM found that group brainstorming hinders productivity due to cognitive fixation. Cognitive fixation is the tendency for people working in groups to get stuck on other peoples ideas, reducing their ability to come up with anything new, and the bigger the group, the more fixated everyone becomes. Spendi ng time alone not only eliminates distractions but also ensures that you dont have trouble with too many cooks.Bringing it all togetherEveryone benefits from solitude. Take the opportunity this week to spend some time alone. This post first appeared on LinkedIn.

Here are five of the top executive soft skills and how to showcase them during the recruitment or hiring process. Leadership Vision Track Record Entreprenurial Innovation Leadership Its no surprise that companies demand leadership from their new executive hires. However, being able to effectively lead a group of people is a result of a diverse blend of skills, making it tricky to  show leadership on your resume. To describe a nuanced trait like leadership, be sure to provide examples and context that spotlight your abilities from different angles. Mention and demonstrate the sub-skills most important to leadership: inspirational, integrity, problem-solving, communication, et al. Describe the teams you managed. Answer these questions: how many people were you in charge of? What were your teams accomplishments? How did you contribute to or facilitate the teams successes? Example:  Led team of 15+ marketers to integrate global advertising campaigns with local activations. Personally built relationships and improved collaboration with Asia HQ resulting in increased budget investment in the Korean division. Ask yourself: what situations benefited the most from your timely leadership? Guiding an organization through a difficult acquisition or finding a way to salvage a doomed project demonstrates leadership. Example: Provided change leadership to ensure seamless acquisition of ABC Company by XYZ Company, resulting in 100% employee retention across senior and middle management teams. Vision “Theres nothing more demoralizing than a leader who cant clearly articulate why were doing what were doing, wrote  James Kouzes and Barry Posner in The Leadership Challenge. Vision is one of the key traits that separate a successful middle manager from a coveted C-suite executive. The ability to establish and communicate a clear vision facilitates innovation, attracts top talent, and cultivates employee loyalty. When you mention your big ideas, initiatives, and accomplishments, demonstrate your vision by including the why and  placing them in context of the bigger picture. This shows that youre not only focused on ticking boxes and beating quotas, youre invested in creating a clear roadmap for your employees and furthering the companys mission. Track Record You need your listed work experience to speak for itself when it comes to track record. Your resume and LinkedIn profile shouldnt just be a diary of where and when, but a detailed booking of your greatest professional accomplishments. By packing your resume with measurable results and accomplishments, you can prove your track record of success. Entrepreneurial An entrepreneurial mindset is mandatory in the startup world but is also a highly valued trait for companies looking to build or shake things up. This soft skill will be easily identified if you have experience leading startups, working in venture capital, or have received formal entrepreneurial training, but its still possible to show it off in other ways if you dont. Think back to any pet projects you nurtured, departments you grew, or calculated risks that paid off big. Even if youve spent your career in stuffy corporate environments, these types of accomplishments will show that you possess an entrepreneurial spirit. Example: Assembled members of product and design teams to create ABC Company Labs, a part-time special committee dedicated to innovation, collaboration, and RD. Innovation Innovation will have some crossover with vision and entrepreneurship, but should be a little easier to showcase. Compile the best examples and stories from your past experience in which you changed operating procedure, streamlined processes, consolidated systems, or mined a previously untapped sector of the market. Basically, what change were you responsible for, and how did it benefit the company? Example: Grew new business revenue 200% over 2 years in Southwest market by employing longer sales cycles to close deals in historically challenging territory. In an interview setting, take it up a notch by doing your research and preparing a couple innovative ideas for the company. A corporate recruiter, hiring manager, or interviewer learns next to nothing if you simply say, Im a proven leader with entrepreneurial vision a track record of innovation. Show, dont tell. Stories and examples will give you a leg up on the competition. Learn how to create a dedicated  soft skills resume section here. What are the most important soft skills for your resume? Job Application Email Examples and Writing Tips

Job Application Email Examples and Writing Tips Job Application Email Examples and Writing Tips There are many ways to apply for a job. You may need to  submit your application through an online system  that the company has in place. For some jobs, particularly retail ones, you may still be able to  apply in-person  and  fill out an application by hand. One of the most common ways to apply for jobs today, however, is by sending an  application letter via email.   Review tips for what to include in a job application email message, tips for writing a message that will get read, and examples of emails to use asstarting points for your own correspondence. What to Include in Your Job Application Email   Your email job application letter is a  cover letter. This means that the intent of the email is to let the recipient know: Why you are writingWhich job you are applying forWhat your qualifications are for the jobHow you will follow up or how the recipient can get in touch with you Tips for Writing a Successful Job Application Letter   Your email does not have to be lengthy. Here are a few tips for how to assemble your application letter:   Subject line:  Since hiring managers receive a lot of emails, make it easy for them to filter application emails. Include your name and the job title you are applying for in the  messages subject line. If a job has been assigned a posting number (as happens on Craigslist), provide this as well. Salutation:  If possible, address your email to a specific person. Sometimes you can determine this by reviewing the companys website or by  calling their front office to ask who manages their job searches. If a name isnt available, you can open with, Dear Hiring Manager, as in the sample letter above, or with the more formal, “To Whom It May Concern.” First paragraph:  In the first paragraph of your letter, youll want to explain why youre writing. Mention where you saw the job application, the date when it was posted, and whether it was presented on the companys website, posted on a job search board, etc. If you were referred by a friend or colleague, mention this here. Middle paragraphs:  This space in the letter is where you can make a pitch for your candidacy. Why would you be a good fit for the job? Highlight relevant jobs and responsibilities as well as accomplishments. Make sure not to copy your resume directly.   Final paragraph:  Use this space to thank the recipient for reading your email, and mention that your resume is attached. It is also the space to thank recipients forconsidering  your application; mention,  too, when and how you will follow up.   Polite close:  Use a  polite close, such as Best or Sincerely,  to sign off your letter. Thentype your full name.   Email signature:  You can also include your  email signature, which is an easy way to provide contact information to recipients. Attaching your resume:  Dont forget about your resume! Attach it to the  email message in the format requested by the employer. If a specific format isnt required, send it  as a PDF or Word document. What is the best design for a pharmaceutical sales resume?Adopt the formatting of our pharmaceutical sales resume sample by using a standard chronological format for your own application. This formatting is great for both experienced and entry-level jobseekers. Start with a summary statement, and then delve into your core qualifications. Work history should take up the most space on the page. Allow enough space to have a detailed description of each previous place of employment. Finally, you will end with your education. Applicants with less than 10 years of work experience should only have a one-page document while applicants with more than 10 years can have resumes that are two pages.2. What goes in the qualifications section of a pharmaceutical sales resume? Some of the best skills to include on a sales resume include physical stamina, customer service, interpersonal skills, and self-confidence. Additional skills you will find on a pharmaceutical sales resume sample will relate to working with others and displaying digital prowess. Get specific when you can. Mentioning a particular software you worked with will help immensely, especially if the hiring manager uses an Applicant Tracking System, which scans numerous documents in a short amount of time to see which ones include desired keywords.3. What should you include about your accomplishments on your pharmaceutical sales resume? Before writing your resume, you should create a list of everything you have accomplished. This includes actual awards but should also entail promotions, problems you solved, and ways in which you aided your employer. If you have at least three points to discuss, then include them on your resume in their own section.4. What should your education section look in a pharmaceutical sales resume? You will see that a separate accomplishments section is optional, and the pharmaceutical sales resume sample may not have one. Our resume builder provides step-by-step guidelines for how to develop each section of your application. Our pharmaceutical sales resume sample puts the education section at the end, and you should do the same. You can put it more toward the top if you recently graduated from a prestigious university.5. What’s the best way to show you work well in a team on a pharmaceutical sales resume?Putting “Team player” in your resume’s skills section is not enough. You want to include specific instances of where you led a team to success. Recount a story where your team faced challenges and met a goal. It is acceptable to toot your own horn on a resume, so feel free to shine a spotlight on yourself. The work experience section should be longest on your resume, as you can see from our pharmaceutical sales resume sample, so you have plenty of space to go into detailed anecdotes.

Understanding Stress and How It Affects the Workplace

Understanding Stress and How It Affects the Workplace Understanding Stress and How It Affects the Workplace Stress is normal. Everyone feels stress related to work, family, decisions, your future, and more. Stress is both physical and mental. It is caused by major life events such as illness, the death of a loved one, a change in responsibilities or expectations at work, and job promotions, loss, or changes. Major workplace and personal stress are inevitable. Smaller, daily events also cause stress. This stress is not as apparent to you, but the constant and cumulative impact of the small stressors adds up to a big impact. This impact has an effect on your physical and mental sense of well-being. The Physical Impact of Stress on Your Sense of Well-Being In response to these daily stresses, your body automatically increases blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, metabolism, and blood flow to your muscles. This stress response is intended to help your body react quickly and effectively to any high-pressure situation. However, when you are constantly reacting to small or large stressful situations, without making physical, mental, and emotional adjustments to counter their effect, you can experience stress that can hurt your health and well-being. It is essential that you understand both your external and internal stress-causing events, no matter how you perceive those events. Stress can also be positive. You need a certain amount of stress to perform your best at work. The key to stress management is to determine the right amount of stress that will give you energy, ambition, and enthusiasm versus the wrong amount of stress which can harm your health, outlook, relationships, and well-being. Important Stress Causing Issues, Characteristics, and Traits While each person is different and has different events and issues that cause stress, there are some issues that almost universally affect people. These are the stressors you most want to understand and take measures to prevent. Feeling out of control,Feeling directionless,Guilt over procrastination or failing to keep commitments,More commitments than time,Change, especially changes you didnt initiate or institute,Uncertainty, andHigh expectations of self. What Affects Your Coping With Stress Skills? During times of stress and uncertainty, you can anticipate some predictable issues, problems, and opportunities. Some people need to talk it out. Others suffer silently. Some find relief in complaining. Some talk and talk and talk, but are really supportive of the change. Others find ways to sabotage changes and undermine efforts to move forward.Different levels of stress and change occurring in other areas of their lives.During the change, people will experience different amounts of impact from the current changes and stress-producing situations. The will also experience different amounts and types of support from their spouse, significant other, friends, supervisor, and coworkers. It is important to recognize that people who are experiencing serious stress and change may not be capable of performing exactly as they have in the past. Stress can cause physical, emotional, and behavioral problems which can affect your health, energy, well-being, mental alertness, and personal and professional relationships. It can also cause defensiveness, lack of motivation, difficulty concentrating, accidents, reduced productivity, and interpersonal conflict. Too much stress can cause minor problems such as sleep loss, irritability, backaches, or headaches, and can also contribute to potentially life-threatening diseases such as high blood pressure and heart disease. During stressful times or situations, people often blame themselves for being weak or for their inability to handle it. Often managers in organizations do not understand the normal progression of change or stress-producing situations and they expect employees to immediately return to total productivity after a stressful event. It doesn̢۪t happen. Stress Results From Change People have deep attachments to their work groups, organizational structures, personal responsibilities, and ways of accomplishing work. When any of these are disturbed, whether by personal choice or through an organizational process from which they may feel quite removed and not involved, a transition period occurs. The language of success

The language of success The language of success Let’s talk about the  power of language. We’re all looking for massive success in life. But while some have cracked the code, others are  left confused  and lagging in the dust.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Indulge me for a moment and let your mind wander to your last dental visit. I can see you now. Seated in the center of a sterile room. A dental assistant wraps a smock around your neck and preps you for the dentist. An exam light shines in your eyes and a suction valve is lodged in the corner of your mouth. “Central incisor, molar, inferior 2, 5.WTF are they talking about you wonder. Why are my teeth numbered, and what do these numbers mean? Here’s another example that’s perhaps more relevant. You meet up with some  new colleagues  or attend a networking event. The bulk of attendees work in an industry you know of but are worlds apart from. They’re speaking E nglish but you have no idea what they’re talking about. Now imagine a new scenario. You’re at the same  networking event. And again, you’re outside of the industry. What’s different this time? This time you have a secret weapon. And that secret weapon is you speak their language.Sometimes the only thing that’s holding you back from the next level in your career, your business, your relationships, and whatever else you’re reaching for, is the language you use in and around them. The Language of SuccessPlain and simple, successful people speak another language. And in order to  get to the next level, you need to know the code. Luckily, the code is here for the taking. You just have to know where to look.To get started, let’s focus on 3 simple words that will serve as the building blocks of your new language. Baby steps. Easy does it. You’ll be fluent in no time. Here are the 3 words  to add to your arsenal of success words when you find yourself in  circles of power  and influence:“Risk”DefinitionThe Marriam-Webster dictionary defines risk as the possibility of loss or injury and the chance that an investment (such as a stock or commodity) will lose value. Risk is exposure to hazard or danger. Why You Should Use ItWhen’s the last time you took a risk? If there’s one thing professionals in successful circles are comfortable with, it’s risk. They take regular risks  in business and life  and want to know if you’re comfortable with doing the same.Facebook founder  Mark Zuckerberg  has said “the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is not taking risks.”When it comes to success risk is not just a suggestion, it’s an absolute necessity.“Empathy”DefinitionThe dictionary definition for empathy is the capacity for and action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another. Why You Should Use ItOh  empathy. The golden word sweeping the streets of Silic on Valley. What was once the word of the moment has proved to have staying power and be a  measurable quotient  of company success. And thank goodness. Now more than ever corporate profits and wealth inequality are at an  all-time high. There is no reason why success in life and business cannot live alongside caring for others. Adding this word to your vocabulary will refine your vision and signal your capacity for leadership.“Buy-in”DefinitionMerriam-Webster defines this as: the acceptance of and willingness to actively support and participate in something (such as a proposed new plan or policy). Why You Should Use ItFinally, there’s buy-in. How engaging are your ideas? When’s the last time you got buy-in for them? Who’s behind you? How’d you get them to get behind you? Buy-in is your ability to motivate others and move people to action. When it comes to having more success in life and business, you’re going to have to be able to move people to action. Talk about how yo u’ve been able to get buy-in and the right people will listen. This article first appeared on CapitolStandard.com.

Improve Your Job Interview Strategy in 2015

Improve Your Job Interview Strategy in 2015 Improve Your Job Interview Strategy in 2015 The New Year is a great time to reflect on bad habits that limit your potential. If you’re job-hunting or looking to make a career change, it’s also a perfect time to identify how your habits and attitude might affect the results of your job search. Not only does a negative attitude repel human resources managers, but approaching the job hunt with a bad attitude will also limit your options from the start. You’ll be less likely to apply to jobs that might be a great fit, and you’ll identify fewer possibilities. The best way to eliminate a negative attitude is to counter your negative self-talk with action. Here are five common job hunt excuses and how to beat them. “I Send so Many Applications, and I Never Get the Job” It’s easy to pay lip service to perseverance and persistence, but it’s hard to live it in real life when you’ve sent hundreds of applications without a response. But so many candidates approach the job hunt as a numbers game (the more applications, the more opportunities) that they ignore the role that quality plays in the application process.   For every application that catches an HR manager’s eye, there may be five that go straight to recycling. Submitting a high volume of resumes might not be a bad idea for your job search, but your goal for 2015 is to focus on quality instead of quantity. Customize your resume and cover letter for every job and make it clear how you would use your unique skills and experiences to meet the needs of this position. Include as many numbers and figures as possible to illustrate the value you bring to each position and proactively address each of your challenges. “I’m Too Old to Get the Job” Despite the discrimination protection offered by the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), ageism in the workplace is a real fear for many job candidates. This fear can make it difficult to apply for jobs or attend interviews with confidence. It can also lead you to inadvertently focusing on the parts of the job you are not comfortable with or can overlap with stereotypes about your age such as not being comfortable with technology or “checking out” of your career before you retire. It’s time for an attitude adjustment. Instead of being afraid of being aged out of your industry, do what you have always done to stay competitive in your field: seek out new ways to do your job as quickly and efficiently as possible. If you approach each job application and interview from this angle, you’ll be able to present your experience in a compelling and inspiring way. Then revamp your resume in an ageless way and use your personal time for age-specific personal development. “I’m Too Young to Get the Job” You might see a new opportunity or feel passionately about the position or the company only to find out the position calls for a lot more experience at a much higher pay grade. Or you might be frustrated by the pressure to commit to your current job before you have the experience to know whether or not it is the right fit for you. Relax. Every HR manager wants to uncover a diamond in the rough. Your interviewer isn’t necessarily looking for someone with a perfect experience match, but he or she does want to see indications that you are passionate, dedicated and competent. If you’re interviewing for jobs that require more experience or education, do what you can to focus on what experience and insight you do have. Talk up examples that have made you confident that you can do the job and identify ways in which you’ll continue to educate yourself and take on new opportunities. “My Experience isn’t Specific Enough for This Position” If you’re making a career change, you might find yourself applying to jobs that don’t fit your experience. You may love the company, the industry or the role but feel outgunned about sharing your experience and your vision for the position itself. After all, they must be interviewing candidates with a perfect track record within this industry, right? Don’t let this situation discourage you. It’s very rare that you will head into a job interview with 100 percent perfect experience for the job. Counter this experience mismatch by making your experience more specific to the job. Research the company thoroughly and reference how your experience and insight will apply to specific situations in this company’s future. Show, don’t tell, how your experience makes you a great fit for succeeding in this position. “My Work Record isn’t Great, So No One Will Hire Me” If you have a poor work record with periods of unemployment or several dismissals and you don’t think anything is wrong, you probably won’t get the job. No one wants to work with someone who isn’t self-aware, and no one wants to hire someone like that, either. The only way to move forward after terminations and self-induced unemployment (layoffs generally do not negatively affect your work record) is to own up to your mistakes and express genuine learning from them. If you have an interview it’s because you show potential. But you’ll be asked to account for your record. Responsible, effective workers are self-aware and own up to their mistakes. To communicate your trustworthiness, it’s up to you to address your past failures proactively and share what you have learned from them. Provide character references that speak to your changed attitude and willingness to learn on the job. Let the HR manager decide if it’s time for a second chance. Don’t make the decision for them by being negative or not facing your past. Is something holding you back from a new year of job hunting and interviewing? The good news is that you’re in complete control of the most important part of the interview: your attitude. Take some time to reflect on how to make this year more positive and more successful by reviewing your most common types of negative self-talk and countering them with actionable advice.

Leadership Interview Questions and Answers

Leadership Interview Questions and Answers Leadership Interview Questions and Answers Are you interviewing for a job in which you would have a leadership role? If so, expect the hiring manager to ask about the experience that qualifies you to lead, your leadership style, and your accomplishments. Even if you’re not applying for a leadership role, you might still have to answer interview questions on leadership. Leadership refers not only to managing others, but also to being a strong example for your coworkers. Hiring managers want candidates who will inspire their teammates to do their best work, even if they’re not technically managing the group. Preparing for leadership-focused questions in advance of the interview will help you give strong answers in the moment and feel confident both before and during the interview. Use the sample questions and “Best Answers” listed at the end of this article to help you prepare your own personalized responses. How to Answer Interview Questions About Leadership Prepare for  interview questions  about leadership by thinking about the leadership skills that are most important for the position. Analyze the job listing for more information on the type of leader they are looking for, as well as the types of tasks you will need to perform. Another way to prepare is to look at this list of  leadership skills  and circle any skills that you think are critical to the job. Also, review this list of  management skills  employers look for in applicants. Once you have a few key skills in mind, think back to all of the positions you have had where you’ve held leadership roles. These might not necessarily be management positions, but they should be jobs in which you were a leader in some way (for example, perhaps you often served as a team leader in a job). If you’re a  recent graduate  or have limited work experience, you might not have experience directly related to the job. So, expand your thinking to volunteer work, clubs, and academics, all of which can provide useful examples of your leadership abilities. Use the STAR Interview Response Technique A thoughtful, relevant anecdote is often the best way to answer these kinds of questions, particularly when they are  behavioral interview questions. These are questions that ask you to provide examples from past work experiences to prove your qualifications for the job at hand. When answering behavioral interview questions about leadership, use the  STAR interview response technique:      (S)  Situation:  Explain the background of the situation. What was your job?      (T)  Task.  What was the particular task you had to perform? If there was a particular problem you were addressing, explain what it was.      (A)  Action:  What action did you take (or what skills did you use) to complete the task or solve the problem?      (R)  Result:  What was the outcome of the situation? Did you complete the task well? Did you solve the problem? Here’s an example question and answer: Give an example of a time you unexpectedly had to take up a leadership role.Ӊ€œAt my last job, I was a sales associate for a large company. Our company’s overall sales numbers were down from the previous quarter, and our manager asked all sales associates to suggest possible methods for improving sales. I gave a brief presentation on a solution I created, which involved changes to our sales training method.
